Rotational Cockpit Workshop Project

Overview

This project explores expanding ergonomic options for radiology workstations, focusing on a rotational cockpit chair-desk system that allows up to 180° rotation without added ergonomic stress. Its goal is to help radiologists—especially trainees—minimize fatigue and maximize comfort and efficiency in image interpretation through flexible positioning and expanded visual access.

Core Concepts

• Rotational cockpit designs allow users to move fluidly among sit, stand, and perch positions, while the desk and chair rotate to support various working postures.
• An extended visual array provides much more display space, giving users the ability to visualize a larger volume of images and information with reduced physical strain.
• In-service workshops teach radiologists how to take advantage of these movement options by “surfing” three different visual sweet spots within the expanded array, optimizing their viewing position for comfort and image analysis.

Project Structure and Methods

• Four station prototypes will be built and introduced for clinical testing and resident feedback.
• The radiology team will participate in hands-on training, learning movement strategies and experimenting with workstation configurations.
• The prototypes are designed to facilitate seamless transitions between different working postures and allow each user to find their personal areas of optimal comfort and visibility.

Research Focus

• This is an iterative research project: station design and setup will be continually refined based on user experience, clinical scenario, and stated personal preference.
• The goal is to determine which factors—such as rotational capability, array size, posture options, or display orientation—lead to the best results for comfort, efficiency, and performance under different clinical demands.

Expected Outcomes

• Through collaborative experimentation and ongoing feedback, the workshop aims to advance ergonomic workstation design, clarify best practices for minimizing strain, and maximize viewing flexibility for radiologists.
• By engaging residents early in ergonomic workspace research, the project supports healthier work habits and enhances both clinical output and career-long well-being.
